At first, I just read the book 《The Little Prince》for finish homework. But gradually, I found that the book is not just a fairy tale. It is a wonderful story which contains innocence, love, sarcasm, criticism and so on. The book tell a story about a little prince, who comes from a small planet, in a pilot view. Through the little prince’s experience, the story indicates the weakness of adults.
The first chapter is about the pilot. In his childhood, he once drew two picture that the outside and inside of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But when he showed the pictures to adults, they did not understand it and did not pay attention to it. So the author became a pilot rather than a painter. Not only is this part introduces the background of the author, but it also tells us adults seldom understand children and pave the way for the acquaintance to the little prince.
Then in a desert, the pilot comes across the little prince. They become friend and have an unforgettable period. In the major part of the book, the author use narration interposed to show the reader the travel experience of the little prince in many planets. In his own planet, he has three volcanoes, baobab trees and a flower. The flower is an important role in the story. She was haughty at first, but when the little prince is about to leave the planet, she feel sad and find herself fall in love with the little prince. In his journey, he met a variety of people. Almost each of them stands for a weakness of adults. He meets a king who firmly believe that he rule all the things. But actually he is the only creature on his planet. Then the little prince meets a conceited man. He is willing to hear the praise and admiration from others merely. It is like the people who pursue the vanity. And then, the tippler who forgets the reason he drinks alcohol, the businessman who counts ‘his’ stars day in and day out, the lamplighter and the geographer all get along with the little prince for a few time. Finally the little prince comes to the Earth.
On the Earth, the little prince comes across some interesting things, such as the flower, the snake, the fox, a garden of roses, a railway switchman, a merchant and, of course, the pilot. At last the snake uses its poison to send the little prince back to his own planet.
Although the book is in a child view, it also implicates some profound truth. Firstly, in the chapter four, the author mentions an astronomer. He has found an asteroid, but when he told others his discovery in an international conference, nobody believed him, for the reason that he was in a Turkey suits. What is ironical is that the next time he do the same thing in the conference in an elegant suit, all the people believe him. The author uses this astronomer to criticize the ethnic discrimination. Secondly, the flower in the desert stands for the people with tunnel vision. In a way, it is as same as the frog at the bottom of the well. Besides, the merchant selling the medicine for thirsty represent the person who is crazy about saving time and overlooks other things. What is more, the farewell with the little prince may be the most touching part of the story. The pilot repeats the word over and over again. He does not want to lose such a friend. The little prince is like a lighthouse in the darkness.
There are many classic sentences in the book. Especially, the sentence “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes”. This sentence teaches me a lot. The most significant truth can merely feel by heart. Eyes only see the surface and the heart can feel the internal. In other words, we are not supposed to be confused by what we see from eyes, the things we feel by heart is the most importance indeed.
From the perspective of children, the book shows us abundant of connotation. We can see the love between the little prince and his rose, the responsibility the little prince bears, the incomprehension from the adults. More importantly, the innocent little prince actually attack on the false and numb world of adults. They only care about the fame, the money and forget the origin. To fulfill our desires, we have lost too much. It is the little prince that guides us to found the original and sincere world. Although the little prince has left, the affect he brings to us is still exists. I would never forget the volcanoes, the baobab trees, the roses, the planet that can see the sunset more than forty times a day, and certainly, the little prince.
