Jonathan Swift was born into a poor family in Ireland. Due to his
father's early death, Swift early contacted with society and began to
develop the ability to analyze things and sharp observation. Gulliver's
first voyage, as a ship's doctor, he was stranded in Lilliput, the land
of little people, due to a storm. Here, the inhabitants of the small
country, who are only six inches tall, regard him as a giant. Gulliver
was initially captured, but gradually won the trust of the people
through friendly actions. However, the suspicion and conspiracy of the
officials of the little people's country eventually forced Gulliver to
flee. He found a ship in Blefuscu and returned to Britain. Gulliver's
second voyage takes him to North America. On an island, he is captured
by a giant who is sixty feet tall. Everything in the giant's world is
huge, and Gulliver is like a toy. The king is just and impartial, and he
is interested in Gulliver's stories, but he is disgusted with his war
tools such as gunpowder and guns, believing that reason and kindness are
the ways to govern a country. In his third voyage, Gulliver reached the
flying island of Laputa. The inhabitants there had strange appearances
and were highly accomplished in mathematics and music, but they were
obsessed with impractical research. In his last voyage, here, the
rational horses, Houyhnhnms, are the masters. Gulliver was saved by a
sorrel little horse. However, due to the presence of Yahoos, the
Houyhnhnms felt uneasy about Gulliver's presence, and eventually he was
forced to leave."Gulliver's Travels" is not only a novel full
of fantasy, but also a profound reflection on human society. With his
unique satirical technique, Swift revealed the various ills of 18th
century English society, but also sparked our thoughts on modern
society. "Gulliver's Travels" reminds us that while pursuing
scientific and technological progress and material wealth, we should not
ignore the human nature and the justice of society. Only when we truly
recognize our own weaknesses and strive to correct them can we create a
better world.
