• The Silk Road Definition and Overview The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes connecting the East and West. It derived its name from the silk trade which was one of the major transported along these routes. Spanning thousands of miles, it not only exchange of goods but also cultures, and technologies between different civilizations. Goods Traded From China, silk was the most famous export, along with porcelain, tea, paper, and various handicrafts. In return, China imported precious metals such as gold , spices like pepper and cinnamon from India and Southeast Asia, as well as fine glassware from the West. Cultural and Technological Exchanges Religions such as Buddhism and Christianity spread along the Silk Road, influencing the spiritual beliefs of different regions. Technological advancements like papermaking, printing techniques, and the compass were introduced to the West, while Western astronomical and mathematical knowledge also found its way to China.
