Remove the phantom in our hear
I have seen two films which were adapted from novels, one is Pride and Prejudice, and another is The Phantom of the Opera. These two novels and films are all perfect, which I appreciate most. The film version of this novel, The Phantom of the Opera, attracted me so much that I usually dreamed of being one of the characters in the film. But the result was always the same, I was scared to wake up. Although I saw the film, I was curious whether the novel could be more interesting or not. And the novel really surprised me, and made me think a lot.
The author himself acted as a journalist in the novel to reveal the truth of the phantom of the opera. In the opera lived a phantom, who seemed to have the great power to shuttle in everywhere in the opera, which I considered the most horrible thing if I didn’t know the method he used. Imagine when there was a sound in a room which you entered into only to discover nothing! The hero was a man called Raoul, who appreciated and fell in love with Christine, a well-noted singer thanks to the cultivation by the ghost. Raoul had a brave mind, I think, because the time he heard of the sound in Christine’s room when he later burst into the room only to find no one here, he just felt puzzled and made up his strong mind to reveal the truth instead of running away like what I would do,. The ghost fell in love with Christine, so he couldn’t bear Raoul’s love to Christine, but Christine couldn’t accept the cruel behaviors that the phantom had done, for instance, the death of Joseph Buquet, a scene-shifter, who was hanged in the cellar of the stage, which was done by the phantom. So she tried to leave the phantom, which really pissed the ghost off because of his feeling of the sense of being betrayed. Ultimately, Raoul and Christine fell in love with each other, and decided to escape from the phantom. The phantom was driven to crazy so he captured Christine and Raoul. He gave Christine the choice to choose between him and Raoul, but threatened Christine to get married with him. If not, Raoul would be killed. Christine loved Raoul so much that she promised to leave Raoul and get married with the phantom.
However, at last, the phantom gave up his love to Christine. Maybe it was because the kiss given by Christine that made him realize that Christine wouldn’t love him at all. Only on account of the promise given by the phantom which was to protect Raoul from being killed, Christine compromised, which was an exact evidence to show her fright, helplessness. Unsurprisingly, finally, the phantom released Christine and Raoul, and vanished sorrowfully before the police could capture him. At the end of the story, many years after, after Christine died, Raoul got an auction and went to Christine’s tomb. When he put the auction before the tomb, he found a fresh rose tied with a green silk ribbon.
Maybe the phantom still loved Christine and observed her silently. He saw her love, get married, and die, but he himself could not even say hello to her. What a poor man! Maybe everyone hates or feels scared about the phantom, but I just feel pity for him. Only on account of the ugly appearance which he himself could not decide, the poor ghost was even abandoned by his mother, which led to the development of the abnormal character. He didn’t obtain love from even one female! What’s worse, others made fun of his physical handicap. It was for lack of love that the ghost became indifferent and even cruel. What he had done was only to find a normal love, live a normal life. But others pushed him into an abyss, in a way they didn’t even care about.
This lets me think about our lives. We appealed to everyone to see everyone as equals, but how we behave in reality? Maybe we will not make fun of others exteriorly, but in our mind, can we say definitely that we give equal treatment to everyone including people like the phantom? Insulating someone simply just because he or she has something different from us is unacceptable in our eyes, but the phenomenon exactly exists.
What we should do is to remove the prejudice in our mind, which I considered to call it as the phantom. The phantom in our heart is more horrible than the phantom of the opera. It is because of it that so many tragedy appear in our society. So if we could be more tolerant, less judgmental, give more love to others, maybe we could change their life.
