The Sorrows of Young Werther

The Sorrows of Young Werther was written by Goethe. Goethe was born in Germany. He is a great man in culture. Goethe had created considerable works in the sixty years. These works reflected the changes in politics、economy and culture of Germany and Europe. The book caused a heated debate at that time. It uncovered the social contradictions. It called on the young man to pursue freedom and equality like the leading character-Werther in the novel.

    Werther is the main character in the novel. Young Werther arrived at a small town. The town is beautiful. Natural scenery and honest custom here gave young Werther so much pleasure. Shortly afterwards, he came across a girl named Lotte at a ball. From that moment on, he developed a genuine affection for Lotte. Werther fell in love with Lotte, but Lotte had been engaged to Werther’friend-Albert. Werther was put in an awkward position. Considering that Albert was very sincere to him, he had thought about giving up, but he did lost self-control. Lotte liked him too, but this is not “love”. It is just friendship. Werther felt hopeless about their love. He made up his mind to leave here, trying to be buried in work. However, he could not stand working in the dark environment and dirty interpersonal relationship made him can not breathe. He was so pure that he can not tolerate staying there in the least. Not displaying talents and deep longing for Lotte drove him to return to meet Lotte. However, she was married. Finally, Werther decided to commit suicide for the reason that he could not break free from the shackles of the mind.

     The book has nothing attractive plot. But the biggest feature of the book is its writing format. It uses letters, which is quite rare in other works. In addition, the novel was written in the style of first person, which make readers feel like he is talking to themselves. There are a lot of famous sayings I love in the book. For example, I will no longer ruminate, as I always used to do, on the petty trouble which Fate puts in my way. I will enjoy the present and let bygones be bygones. The saying taught me to forget the past, seize the present and trust the future as little as I may.

      To sum up, the book-The Sorrows of Young Werther really taught me a lot. It is really a hit. Therefore, sparing some time to read the book is an excellent choice.
