The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a short yet powerful story about Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who hasn’t caught a fish in 84 days. Refusing to give up, he sails far into the ocean and hooks a giant marlin, fighting it for three days with all his strength. Though sharks eat the marlin by the time he returns to shore, leaving only a skeleton, Santiago’s courage never fades.

Hemingway’s simple writing makes the story easy to follow, but it’s full of heart. Santiago’s famous line—“A man can be destroyed but not defeated”—sums up the book’s message: true strength lies in resilience, not victory. Even when life beats us down, holding onto pride and hope makes us winners. This little book packs a big punch, reminding readers that bravery is about trying, no matter the outcome.
