Wuthering Heights seems like a melodramatic saga, but it actually tells a painfully tangled story of love and hate.

Heathcliff and Catherine are like a pair of wild hedgehogs—they hurt each other deeply, yet they can’t live without one another. Catherine’s line “I marry Linton to help Heathcliff” sounds noble, but it drags both of them into an abyss. Heartbroken by this “calculation”, Heathcliff turns from a forbearing young man into a vengeful fiend. He seizes Wuthering Heights, torments the Lintons, and even takes his revenge on the next generation. The more he retaliates, the emptier he feels—what he truly hates is not his enemies, but himself for failing to stay with Catherine.

There are no perfect heroes in this book. Heathcliff is obsessive and cruel, Catherine is vain and weak, and the Lintons are all selfish in their own ways. Yet these flawed characters perfectly portray the tug-of-war between love and hate. Love at its extreme is possession; hate at its extreme is imitation. Until his last breath, Heathcliff clings to Catherine’s memory, and his final return to the moors feels like a release.

In the end, Wuthering Heights is not about wealthy family feuds. It is a tragedy of two kindred spirits, torn apart by harsh reality. After reading it, you’ll feel a heavy weight in your chest, but you can’t help but sigh: this is love and hate in its rawest form—frenzied, intense, and truly unforgettable.
