A Review of Insights into Chinese Culture

As a freshman majoring in English at Hanshan Normal University, I am deeply fond of Chinese traditional culture and Chaoshan culture. Since I came to Chaozhou, I have been attracted by its unique folk customs, delicious snacks and special tea ceremony. My biggest dream is to spread these precious cultures to the world with my English.

But I once felt worried. I couldn’t use proper English to express these cultural contents clearly, even some basic terms. Luckily, my Comprehensive English teacher recommended Insights into Chinese Culture to us. This English version book is perfect for me, because almost all its words are within the CET-4 vocabulary range.

Reading this book brings me a lot of gains. First, I have mastered many useful CET-4 expressions and English knowledge. I used to only memorize四级 words by heart, but this book teaches me how to use them to talk about Chinese culture. For example, I can use “cultural heritage” and “traditional custom” to describe our precious culture easily.

Second, this book helps me deepen my understanding of Chinese traditional culture. It has many short chapters about the Terracotta Army, Confucius’ thoughts and Chinese festivals. It also makes me realize that Chaoshan culture is an important part of Chinese traditional culture.

Most importantly, this book tells me how to spread our culture well. It teaches me that cultural communication is a two-way dialogue. We need to understand our own culture first, then use simple English to tell our cultural stories to foreigners.

This book is not just a reading material for me. It is a useful tool for my CET-4 preparation and a good guide for my dream. It gives me more motivation to study English hard.

I strongly recommend this book to all college students. It can help us improve our English, understand our culture better and pursue our dreams. I will keep reading it and work hard to be a bridge between Chinese culture, Chaoshan culture and the world
