“The Little Prince” is a philosophical fairy tale written by the French
author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which is narrated from the first-person
perspective of a pilot. The pilot is forced to land in the Sahara Desert
due to a plane malfunction, where he encounters the Little Prince from
the B612 asteroid. As they spend time together, the pilot learns about
the Little Prince’s past. There was a proud yet delicate rose on his
planet—thorny yet eager to be protected. Plagued by confusion about how
to love the rose, the Little Prince embarks on an aimless journey across
various planets. He visits six planets one after another, meeting
individuals trapped in their own narrow mindsets: the power-crazed king,
the vanity-obsessed gentleman, the calculation-addicted merchant, the
rule-bound lamplighter, and the impractical geographer. These characters
embody the emptiness, mindlessness, and utilitarianism of the adult
world. In the end, the Little Prince reaches Earth. Amidst the desert, a
rose garden, and the companionship of a fox, he comprehends the true
essence of love. Guided by the fox, he comes to understand the meaning
of "taming"—forging a one-of-a-kind bond. He also realizes
that although his own rose is ordinary among thousands, it has become an
irreplaceable being in the world because of the watering, companionship,
and longing he has bestowed upon it. After lingering on Earth for a long
time, the Little Prince misses his rose intensely and sets off on his
journey back home. The pilot repairs his plane and leaves the desert,
cherishing the Little Prince in his heart for the rest of his life and
keeping the enlightenment the prince brought deeply engraved in his
memory: retain inner innocence and cherish precious things and people,
even amid the pain of connection. For childlike innocence is the
original aspiration that defies the desolation of the adult world.
