Growth

王紫颖

This is an epic of a woman's self-discovery and growth. I first came across Jane Eyre in primary school, yet failed to finish the thick paper book at that time. Nevertheless, the name Jane Eyre has lingered in my memory ever since.

The core of Jane Eyre's view on love is equality. Love is not about attachment, but about the equality of souls. The final ending took me by surprise. I thought Jane would live a free and peaceful life after rejecting St. John, but instead, she returned to Rochester—a choice I could not comprehend at first.

However, I have also learned a great deal from this book: for instance, Jane’s courage to let go of a wrong relationship and her bold refusal of St. John’s moral coercion; St. John’s remark that we should not waste time dwelling on the past but focus our energy on more meaningful pursuits; and Helen’s insight that life is too short for hatred to make any sense.
