Courage Never Fades

The Old Man and the Sea is a simple but powerful novel written by Ernest Hemingway. The story focuses on an old fisherman named Santiago, who struggles bravely against the cruel nature and terrible luck. Although he is poor and weak, he never gives up his hope and dignity.

Santiago has not caught any fish for eighty-four days. However, he still goes out to the sea alone every day. Finally, he catches a huge marlin. He fights with the big fish for three days and nights with great patience and courage. Sadly, he fails to bring the whole fish back. Only a fish skeleton remains when he returns.

Many people may think Santiago loses the battle, but in my opinion, he is a true winner. He does not defeat the sea, but he defeats fear and weakness in himself. The novel teaches us a valuable lesson: a man can be destroyed but not defeated. Failure is not the end of life, but a test of one’s spirit.

This short book deeply touches me. It tells me that true strength lies in persistence and courage. No matter what difficulties we meet, we should keep fighting and never lose our pride.
