Book Review of Jane Eyre Written by Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre is far
more than a romantic love story—it is a sincere ode to self-respect,
spiritual independence and equal humanity. Finishing this novel, I
gained brand-new insights into self-worth and genuine love, and I feel
deep admiration for the protagonist Jane Eyre. From an unloved orphan
to a self-reliant governess, Jane spends her whole life trapped in
unfair circumstances. She is plain-looking, poor and of low social
standing, enduring cold abuse from her aunt and harsh deprivation at
boarding school. Yet all the sufferings never crush her spirit. Instead
of submitting to injustice, she dares to resist prejudice and fight for
basic respect. What moves me deeply is that she never looks down on
herself because of her humble identity; she firmly believes her soul is
no less noble than anyone’s. My strongest emotional resonance lies in
Jane’s attitude toward love. She devotes her whole heart to Mr.
Rochester, yet she refuses to become his secret lover at the cost of her
dignity. When she uncovers his hidden wife, she forces herself to walk
away without hesitation, even though her heart is breaking. For Jane,
love can never be tied to compromise and humiliation. True affection
only lasts when two souls stand equal before God, unchained by wealth,
rank or appearance. Her famous line “Do you think I am an automaton — a
machine without feelings?” perfectly voices every ordinary person’s
desire to be seen and respected. Reading Jane’s growth journey makes me
reflect profoundly. Many people tend to lose themselves while chasing
love or material gains, willing to abandon their bottom line for
comfort. But Jane sets a precious example: our value never depends on
external conditions. No matter how tough life gets, we ought to hold
fast to our independence and self-esteem, and never settle for unequal
love or unfair treatment. This timeless classic leaves endless thoughts
in my heart. Jane’s persistent pursuit of equality and self-worth still
shines brightly today, reminding me to cherish myself first before
loving others.
