The Call of Wild
The call of wild, a popular literature written by Jack London from America, exerts an important influence on me. After reading the book, some experience on people and animals crowds into my mind like a tide, which impels me to rethink attitudes towards civilization and nature.
Buck which is a domestic dog born in Judge Miller’s home lived a comfortable life until he was sold secretly by the cunning gardener. At first, he couldn’t tolerate the so ferocious owner that he tried to escape but he failed. Subsequently, the man in red taught him the law of the stick and club. It was the stick and club that made Buck realize that it is hopeless to struggle when he faced the people in club. Later, he joined in a troop who aimed at finding gold. Different from other dogs, not merely did he fit in the life in the snow and icebound, but also he became cunning in order to eat other dogs’ food. Consequently, Buck used his strength to kill his enemy and become the leader of the dogs. Nevertheless, after Buck met Thornton, Buck’s life was changed henceforth. When they met, Thornton began to cherish Buck and tone down interests. Also, Buck can feel warm again like his original owner when getting along with Thornton. But Buck loved the wild, especially when the calling of wolves from the hills. One day, when he came back from hills, he found that Thornton was killed by Indians. With hostility, Buck killed the Indian who killed Thornton, which rose his savagery and Buck became the king of wolves.
Buck, the protagonist of this book, makes a deep impression on me. Firstly, I think Buck is an overmatch who is full of spirit. When he was abducted by the gardener, he did not choose to give up but to fight, which made him knew that only after he insisted, can he become a leader. Secondly, Buck is looking forward to freedom and the wild. As soon as he was sent to the north, he fit in the local life and fell in love of the wild. What amazed me was that he caught the rabbit in the wild with power and strength. So, after Thornton died, he came back to the wild without hesitation. Thirdly, on the contrary, I think Buck is a ferocious and cunning leader. When he met Hecla, the leader of the dogs, Buck realized that the law of the jungle exists in the wild forever. In an attempt to become the leader, he fought with Hecla cleverly and finally became the leader of the dogs. Also, the leadership of Buck helped the troops break the record of delivery of goods. Most importantly, Buck is also a hero with loyalty and love. When Thornton was in great danger, he went to the torrent to save Thornton at the expense of his life. When Thornton was killed by Indians, Buck revenged the owner without flinching. From the story of Buck and Thornton, I can feel that they truly loved each other and they were willing to help each other under any circumstances.
On reading the story, I can realize the relationship between civilization and nature. In this book, human is so hypocritical and hypocritical that they take advantage of their stick and club so as to train dogs. Although the dogs are tired, they still force dogs to deliver goods, which lead to the death of some dogs. The man in red even says “If you want to be a good dog, everything will be good; but if you choose to be a bad dog, I will break your bones.” With the stick and club, people regard them as the owner of the dogs and ignore the feeling of the dogs, which leads to the death of Hare. The ending indicated human should respect animals and nature.
As far as I am concerned, in our society, we should keep a balance between economy and nature. As we know, even dogs, like Buck, have dignity. In this book, Buck fully demonstrates the subjective consciousness and he has his own dignity and pride, who does not let human dominate his destiny. If we do not respect nature, nature will also not show respect to human. It is universally acknowledged that human leads to the imbalance of nature. It is highly recommended that we should take measures to protect nature and animals as soon as possible to save us and save the earth. We are supposed to pay more attention to nature but not economy. The book says “The more civilized we become the deeper are the fear that back in the barbarism is something of the beauty and joy of life we have not brought along with us.” Only we respect the nature, can human live harmoniously in the earth.
