Introduction

The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), written by the French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1942, is one of the most famous French children’s literature short stories. The book has two leading characters, the little prince from an exoplanet and the pilot, who also serves as the narrator of the whole story. From the perspective of the narrator, the author successfully wrote about the various fancy adventures the little prince takes through his travel to the earth. Not only the story itself will make me weep from time to time, but also the deposit behind the story sets people thinking. Using plain and childish words to narrate, the book vividly reflects the features like emptiness, blindness and foolish in adulthood, and clearly states out the rootless and lonely life that adults are born to live in nowadays. In addition, going straight to the heart of the theme, it deeply criticizes the cash nexus between people and highly promotes the truth, the goodness and the beauty that live in humanity.

As far as I am concerned, it is not merely a fairytale that is suitable for children. What is more, this book helps adults heavily on relooking into their previous life.

Summary of Content

The whole book is divided into 27 chapters. From my standpoint of view, these chapters can be split up into 4 parts. Part 1 ranges from chapter 1 to chapter 4. Part 2 includes chapter 5 to chapter 8. Part 3 is consisted of chapter 17 to chapter 23. And chapter 24 to chapter 27 makes up of the last part.

In the first part, we learn about the initial daily life that the narrator and the little prince lived together. Chapter 1 is about the brief introduction of the narrator, who then became a pilot and his ideas about grown-ups, through which I am able to understand the story better. From chapter 2 to chapter 4, the author described the narrator’s first meeting with the little prince and the process they became acquaintances. The narrator’s plane crashed down in the desert, and that is where the narrator met the little prince. During the period, the narrator got to know some basic information about the little prince.

In the second part, namely chapter 5 to chapter 8, the little prince’s daily life in his planet is shown to me. I myself am warned about the dangers of the baobabs. Feeling fragile, I am aware of the little prince’s insistence of sunsets. And what is more, I start to get familiar with the beloved one of the little prince, a high-headed and love-needed rose. From chapter 9, the little prince set off for his adventures, and chapter 10 to chapter 15 are the records of the little prince’s adventures in such different planets. He encountered a lot of characteristic people, including an overweening and cruel king, a conceited man who looked down upon others, a negative tippler holding a pessimistic view over his life, a weird businessman, an inflexible lamplighter, and a geographer who has never been to any other places except his planet. In chapter 16, the narrator described the earth’s lamplighter.

In the third part, ranging from chapter 17 to chapter 23, the little prince’s life in the earth before meeting the narrator is lively and vividly expressed to me. The little prince, who longed for a friend in the earth, did not know what to do when he first arrived in an uninhabited place. In the next few days, he luckily came across a snake and made acquaintance of it. Besides, he met a flower on the way of looking for men. Followed by which, he decided to climb a mountain range. This time, he discovered a garden of roses and made friends with a fox. Finally, he found a railway switchman and a merchant, achieving his goal.

In the last part , the most moving part, we are broken-hearted for the narrator and the little prince’s farewell. In chapter 24, the narrator was still unable to fix his plane, and what emergent was that both the narrator and the little prince were at the edge of thirst to death. Therefore, they left to hunt for a well in the desert. In the next chapter, finding a well, the little prince began to talk about his return to his planet with the narrator. Though the little prince hated to part with the narrator, he consoled him and returned to his planet in chapter 26. In the last chapter, chapter 27, the narrator eventually got away from the desert, but he still missed the little prince so much. He may look up at the sky at times, imaging the little prince’s current life.

The Conclusion

I fancy the book so much, for it not only awaken my sleeping memory of my childhood, but it also convey some educational concepts to me, enabling me to think about my bygone years in the world deeply and look forward to my future with a much more objective perspective. Until now, I still remember distinctly a sensible sentence written in the forward. It wrote, “All grown-ups were once children although few of them remember it.” I cannot admit that I am a sentimental girl, but I did have a tendency to burst into tears when first coming across the sentence. I myself, to some extent, is a grown-up now. Looking back my childhood is liked tasting a bitter candy, which brings me both happiness and pain.

In such a competitive world, everyone is supposed to do his best so as to win the battle between himself and his opponents. Otherwise, we will be kicked out of the flow, because we are too weak to defend the place we stand. As a consequence, our lives are surrounded by countless books and incomprehensible knowledge. We study hard and swallow boring and unattractive things everyday as a routine. With time flying by, the smiling face we once had disappeared. For the same reason, adults worry about earning a life and getting promoted. Gradually, they have to cater to their needs, regardless of anything else. At last, they become money worshipper, apple-polished guys, conceited men or negative losers, though they do not want these identities at the first place. In its wake, the original, bright color of life itself is covered. They grow up into someone they hate to be, which is sad but true.

Therefore, I highly recommend this book to all of you. It will help you look carefully into your life again, no matter who you are, no matter how you are doing. Perhaps there is a little prince yelling in our hearts, but we just forget him for a long time.
