Book review of the Sorrow of Y
Written by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, the Sorrow of Young wrether is one of the most distinguished masterpiece in the world. It is wrether’s diary which tells readers a sorrowful love story. Young Wrether fall into love with a girl who has been engaged someone. It describes Wrether contradictory mental activity that is he didn’t want to get away from the girl but he had to do that. Actually, Goethe adapted his own experience for this novel. Once when Goethe was youth. He fall in love with a girl named Charlotte, his best friend’s fiancee. His love to Charlotte must be hopeless, so he chose to leave and turn it into a novel. J.W. Von Goethe, he is a famous German writer, scientist and poet. He was a brilliant man of many gifts and he got many achievement in different field.
This novel is not only simply telling a tragic love story, but also reflect to the spirit of anti-feudalism. It had risen a campaign called “Sturm und Drang”(German) against the marriage system at that time. This novel encourages the young adult to fight against the restrict of their marriage and personality.
This book is a epistolary novel. Wrether was born in a middle class and received good education. One day in the early spring, for pushing the worries in his mind, Wrether went to a country with beautiful view. This teenager loved this place as soon as he reached in this countryside. Living in this land of idyllic beauty and having a relax life. Several days later, he met a girl called Charlotte in a dancing party and she is his dancing partner. Soon he fall in love with her. There is only Charlotte in his eyes. However, Charlotte has engaged with Albert, Wrether’s friend. Although Wrether knew the truth he couldn’t stay with Charlotte forever, Wrether still express his emotion to Charlotte. After the party, Wrether missed Charlotte very much, and even he often met Charlotte in his dream. Later Charlotte’s fiance Albert came back. Wrether and Albert are good friends. Sometimes they get together to have a chat which concluded everything. Wrether found that Albert loved Charlotte very much and so did Charlotte. He regarded himself as the man who stepped in of the other couple, so he was extraordinary confused, pained and uneasy. Although he didn’t want to leave this countryside and Charlotte, he finally decided to leave the village for the city because he was persuaded by his friend.
When Wrether got in to the city, he find a job in an government agency easily. He try his best to adjust to this job. But his colleagues are quite unfriendly and hard to get along with. Wrether was fed up with them and tried of the bureaucracy. All of them made him bored and annoyed. Fortunately, he get acquainted with a admirable count C, count C was a brilliant man of wide learning and full of wisdom. Wrether was very satisfied that he could build friendship with such an admirable person. However, at a banquet in count’s house, some nobles come there and were rude to Wrether. There behavior irritated Wrether, so he give up the job and go back to the countryside where he missed very much.
However,everything had changed. Charlotte had been Albert’s wife, those people he knew all fell on hard times.All this things make Wrether felt bad and worried.Finally, the day before Christmas, Wrether make up his mind to say goodbye to Charlotte and bring everything to an end. Two days latter, at midnight, Wrether finished his life and his troubles with Albert’s pistol. He whispered Charlotte’s name at the last time of his life.
Once the book had been published, it was sold out quickly. This book reflected Goethe’s world view and love view. What Wrether was sought for only is the freedom of love and the liberty of personality. At that time, people are still felt constraint because of the feudalism system and thoughts. It is quite hard for people to express their love, which seems hard to imagine nowadays. And this book, by telling Wrether’s sorrowful love story, fought against the feudalism thoughts and call upon everyone to express their thoughts bravely. What’s more, this book also disclosed the darkness of the society at that time and criticized it through words. This book got a warm welcome from then and it has risen a campaign to free people’s mind. Whenever when we talk about Goethe or German literature, the Sorrow of Young Wrether is a book we can’t avoid to refer to. And the value of this book has been admitted by a large number of readers.
