Book Report of The Little Prin
The Little Prince is written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,an author comes from France.In 1943,the versions of French and English is published in the USA for the first time.As the survey data shows,its sales has been more than five hundred million and is second only to Bible.Obviously,its influence is huge.And it is an essential reading for children and adults up to now.
In this book,there is still an airplane just as other works of Saint-Exupéry.He is not only a writer but also a pilot and his life is legend.In this story,the narrator is also a pilot,and to some extent,it maybe is a reflection of the real life.
The thoughts contained in The Little Prince is abundant.And the formation of those thoughts is related to author’s life experience and the historical background at that time. Firstly,the pilot in this book has relations with the author’s occupation.And the plane is as if a tool which author uses to carry something.Saint-Exupéry spent 3 monthes in creating this book,but it is a reflection of the author’s feelings in decades of years.When he was in the Long Island in New York,he wrote the book.The World War Ⅱ is fierce at that time,his homeland,France,faced huge challenge,and he wanted to find out a way to rescue his country in the USA,but the reality leted him down.At the same time he rethought his marriage that faced challenge all the time,and transformed their relationship into the story between the little prince and the rose.Facing the seamy side of the world,people tend to recall their childhood.This is probably why he chose the little prince as the protagonist of his work.He attempts to shape a pure soul for us.From the above, the background of The Little Prince is roughly clear.And some messages of the book can be seen now.
In the book Morphology of the Folktale of Vladimir Propp,he puts forward a pattern of fairy tale creation:firstly,the hero “fly away” ;secondly,the hero looks for a miracle;thirdly,the hero goes though a lot of trubulation;and the last part is the end.The Little Prince is written in this structure.But there are some diffirences.What the little prince seeks for tenaciously is not a miracle but some secrets of philosophy or morality and it is another way of saying:the essence of life.People the little prince meets are all odd and absurd. To find out the answer,he never stops seeking.He comes to Earth,and finally,he seek out what he want:love is responsibility,“communication”help people build happiness and friendship,and the eyes are blind,so one must look with the mind.The story ends with the death or departure of the little prince.People would rather believe that he return to his planet.The end shows unintentionally some sentimental moods.But that is not that important.The little prience said to the narrator,”You will have a lot of smiling stars.”Clearly,those sentimental moods are diluted at the end and death is not that horrible.Maybe Saint-Exupéry want people to keep such childlike heart and be always optimistic.In other ways,the relationship between the little prince and the narrator is moving.The book eulogizes friendship and encourage people to pursue it.In other words,love should be ardent as the valcanos.As for the relationship between the fox and the little prince,it is a kind of love.The fox brings him one step closer to the answer.
All in all,Saint-Exupérye emphasizes friendship,love,and children’s simplicity in this book.It carries a lot.
And there is another symbolism that can not be ignored:the little prince and the pilot-the narrator.The little prince is just like an angle.There is only curiousness about the world in his pure heart.It is the most important symbolism in this book.And the pilot,although he is different from other adults,his thoughts have changed a lot after all.It is not strange that at the begining,they can not understand each other,which is the symbolism of the conflicts betweem children and adults.It is a carrier.The moral world of an adult is full of the trace of modern civilization.In the process of pursuing wealth and status,inevitably,they lose their love.The value of children and adults seems opposite.The thesis can be more clear:the world need love and friendship;do not let worldly affairs occupy your heart.
The little prince is a book loved by children and adults and I am no exception.Now I am an adult.I do not have a legend life as the writer,but I tend to seek for confort from the memory of my childhood,which is the same as the writer.The writer shapes an ideal world via a child.He wants to express:childhood should be a period which is full of dreams.And adults had better keep these dreams in their life.Concentrating on making profits does no good for us but lets us forget precious children’s simplicity.
Because of the littele prince,I know more clearly that what real life is about.I know what is love,what is “tame”,and what is responsibility.Life is not always happy,but to say the least,we should not be tied by fame and gain.Children’s simplicity is the most precious.
