When talking about Sara, both the adults, Miss Minchin and Miss Amelia, and the young kids, including Lavinia and Jessie, expressed a kind of hostile mood. Miss Minchin regarded Sara’s clothes as “perfectly ridiculous” ones, while Lavinia thought that Sara’s dresses were too complicated. From my perspective, all their behaviors were out of jealousy, or to be more specific, envy. The reason why they became hostile was easy to analyze. As an adult, Miss Minchin and Miss Amelia did not possess even one dress as ornate as Sara’s, and of course they were not as wealthy as this child. The sense of failure would certainly make them feel uncomfortable. As for Lavinia, she was probably the richest student in the school before Sara came. However, after Sara’s arrival, she became nothing. No more attention, no more sight was put on her. It is natural for her to feel uncomfortable and unacceptable. Although both adults and children were unfriendly to Sara, there were still some differences between them. In a manner of speaking, envy is a nature of human and everybody would have this kind of feeling. Thus, in my opinion, envy itself is not a negative thing. For children, they are innocent and they don’t hide their emotions. They just say and do what they think, and envy is also a spontaneous display of feeling. But for the adults, they are more hypocritical. On the one hand, Miss Minchin expressed amicability to Sara and spoke highly of her in front of her father. On the other hand, she slagged off Sara behind her backs. It is being a double-dealer that is pathetic.
