The Opposite Sides of Love

李佳璇15308021

Unfortunately, love can never be a sensible thing, which could be used to describe the story of The Phantom of the Opera well, suggesting that the love of the beauty and the beast is hard to exist. If it has to last, maybe the only way for the hero and the heroine is to die, in the meantime with a tightly hug to each other. That's the same in The Phantom of the Opera.

If we talk about it in a non-discrimination way, the ugly of Eric can't be described as a terrible thing, though the description of his ugly face is so strong that it makes me feel fearful from time to time. However, the real root of the tragedy is that, he owns peerless talent and a heart which refuses to be lonely, having fallen in love at the same time. It's just his horrible love that pushes everything and everyone heading to the heart breaking ending. His love to the pretty Christine is one-way, which is such a normal thing in the world, for the mutual love is rare and most of the impressive love is one-way. And then, being not different from any other love, he devoted all his love and talent to her, contributing to her achievement of being the top singer in Paris. Nevertheless, the achievement is meant to be not belonging to both of them only, because of the differences between love and reality, not to mention he has such a scary face. Therefore, there is impossible for pretty Christine to fall in love with him, although she has no ability to deny his gift, which is blinking and shining.

Eric kidnapped Christine at night when she attempted to run away from him. His crazy actions after that, including the affliction to her love and the coercion to Christine, are a mixture of being probable to get love or lose it. He is suffering great pain every minute and hour. But at the moment when Christine agreed to marry him in order to exchange the life of her love, the love had to come to an end finally. It's undoubtedly that the existence of love doesn't need an ending all the time, for it sometimes is just a process of self-destruction.

At last, the ghost realized that he could not live as a normal person, and that his love is meant to be hopeless and desperate, being not able to get the response. Therefore, he let Christine go and abandoned himself, disappearing in the underground alone with his mask left. At last, the beauty leads a happy life with her handsome love in the book, which sounds reasonable enough.

However, I can't help imagining what kind of the life of the partners would be like. They have nothing in common to talk about, expect the childish fairy tales and music, and Christine will gradually become old, being not able to attract the attention of her husband. However, her husband can appeal to a lot of younger and prettier ladies with money. So maybe Christine will leave home and go back to the opera house, continuing singing. But her voice sounds like a pity without the guidance of the angel, the only one who loves her deeply, who has been buried under the opera house forever. She may finally understand what love is, without the company of her angel, the Opera Ghost.

To the Opera Ghost, Eric, love is everything that can save his life. Therefore, to him, the opposite side of his love is just everything in the world. He has no power and ability to fight against the whole world with his love, but he did choose to love, sincerely but humbly. Christine can't hold on her love for she isn't brave enough to stand in the opposite side of all the people for her love, but it doesn't matter at all. Tragedy is just something that tears the beautiful things to show them to the public. That is.
