Completely inconsistent with my expectation that the tragedy of the Opera Ghost’s love story becomes totally stranger! In the musical drama, Christine was frightened when she saw the phantom’s face, but pitied him when he desperately express his ardour to her, but she still could not marry Erik because of love to Raoul and sent back the ring that Erik gave her. Her thoughts were clear, the transformation from fear to pity was also clear. But what happened in the novel? Christine pity Erik when she saw his face, and out of pity and the desire of liberty, she promised to visit Erik when she was sent out of the cellar, but she still refused Erik’s engagement. Then, I don’t quite understand why she gave in and agreed from heart and soul to marry Erik! Well, it seems that she love Erik, at last? No! She still chose to wear Erik’s ring and fled with Raoul! What a woman! What the hell!

From where I stand, the ending of the musical drama was far more than the novel’s. What happened to Erik in the novel? “Erik is dead.” Simple and abrupt. And what happened to Erik in the musical drama? Meg Giry found a white mask from where the phantom showed his last appearance, symbolizing his resurrection that need not care about his appearance, or maybe he went to heaven with his mask hiding his shame left behind. It’s more imagination-provoking.

I’m not always criticizing the book I read. But all of my criticism came out of the disappointment. You can see I give high opinion on the preceding chapters, which shows my surprise and expectation of the novel, but later I found it fail to live up to my high expectation. Only the change of narrator and the additional chapter of the Paris Opera House surprise me.
