Unlike most of the literature, which using and pouring lots of hard language and words, this short story is easily understandable.

   The major characters are Rosemary (like her name, a typical upper class rich girl), the little girl and Philippe. Together with picturing of the shop owner, Katherine clearly depicted different social status. Foremost, Rosemary represents the developing upper class --- not super rich not poor. She is addicted to the material world while is eager to behave like a real lady who has a great heart and be generous. However, only read those great Russian works cannot make her feel great. She wants to act benevolence to conceal her real inner material eagerness. The appearance of the little girl gave her chance to show the world that she not only possess the beauty and fortune but also the great heart which is to help the poor. Once she determined to do so, that poor little girl turned to be a kindness-seeking tool. Rosemary could act kindly by giving her a cup of coffee by the street, whereas taking her home is more than doing so. She also wants to show how rich she is. In this point, the price of the porcelain tea cup can be a clear comparison. Shocked a little by the price, Rosemary took the girl as a consolation. Showing her comparatively rich life may make her feel rich again.

    All these going on the right way as Rosemary perceived until Philippe saying that girl is "pretty". It is also the point where the story went to climax. Ambitiously being generous cannot fundamentally change one's nature of mean. Jealous overwhelmed, Rosemary instantly cut down her benevolent money and put some make-up on.

   This is a story of a superficial material rich woman whom Katherine subtly depicted. The simplicity of the plot and language couldn't overshadow the fantastic mood changing of the protagonist whom Katherine ironically depicted throughout the story.
