Reading report: The Cop and the Anthem
The Cop and the Anthem is a very interesting short novel, the author's humor is present in various ways. In the story, a poor man named Soapy has no job and money. He want to go to the jail because the food in the jail can feed him. He tried a lot to break the law so that the police would catch him and sent him to the jail. He ate great meal without paying the maney; he shouted in the sheed; he grabbed someone's umbrella... However, he failed, the police just didn't catch him. At last, he sat in front of a church and heard the anthem. He thought it was the god's idea to keep him out of jail. He decided to find a job and lived on his own. Nevertheless, at that moment, a police came and took him to jail.
Sometimes, life is just like a joke. The author's humor is through irrationality during the development of plots. Soapy had stirred up trouble for six times, but he is always get police's forgiveness. When Saopy was touched by the anthem and wanted to be a good citizen, he was arrented for groundless reason. This way is a kind of black humor which reflect the social reality. When reading this story, we can't hepl laughing. At the same time, the story cause us to think deeply about the gloomy side of the society.
