While reading a tale of two cities, the experience of Dr Manette reminded me of jean valjean in Hugo's les miserables. The two had the same experience in the context of the Paris revolution, but the relationship between the characters in a tale of two cities was more complex and attractive. Les miserables mainly deals with the fates of many little people in the French revolution, only French people and things. A tale of two cities, set against the backdrop of the French revolution, connects the two great cities of Paris and London, and revolves around Dr Manette's family and the quarter of st Antoine, headed by the Defarge couple. If you are interested in this background story, you can also go to see les miserables, which is one of my favorite works.
