Tess appears as the heroine. Tess's hometown has an event where a group of girls dance in the mountains dressed in white. It's an outing and a social event. When dancing, first the girls pair off. When the church bells ring and the men finish their work in the fields, they join in. Durbeyfield, Tess's father, who appeared in Chapter1, drove home in a rented carriage during the event.
