The book tells the story of an old fisherman who lives a lonely life. Because a big fish is far away from the port, he fights with the sea and sharks to return to the sea. The hero of the story is an old man who lives alone in the port with only a little boy as his friend. He has not caught fish for 84 days in a row. Although others laugh at him, he still believes that he can catch fish. On the eighty-fifth day at sea, he succeeded and caught a very big marlin. But because his boat was too small and his strength was not enough, he was dragged by the fish and ran far away from the port.

The fish's struggle was fierce, but he did not let go. He was sure he could bring the fish back. Later the fish was finally dragged to death by him, but the fish's blood in the process of returning to attract sharks. The sharks attacked the old man's boat and the marlin, and the old man was left alone to fight the sharks with his harpoon. Eventually the old man fought off the shark, but the marlin was also eaten with only a head left.
