After reading the book, I like Catton personally. Catton is described in the novel: "The sun sadly, sadly rises slowly, and the scene it sees is no more miserable than this man. He was rich in talent and noble in feeling, but he had no opportunity to display it, to make a difference, and to be happy. He knows his problem well, but he has resigned himself to wasting away years and years."
