Content abstract

Carrie, a country girl, came to Chicago with a longing for the city. After a time Carrie soon felt disappointed. She lived in her sister's house, where her dreams had been spoiled by poor and humiliated conditions.

Carrie, of course, was not satisfied with the situation, when Drouet, whom she had met on the train, appeared, with his generous hand and financial help, and they lived together.

Her life was a little like the one she had dreamed of, but she found the relationship wrong in name and wrong in words.

Then she met Hurstwood, an inn-keeper, and they went back and forth and fell in love with each other very quickly. They walked in and out of the world, living the life of food and clothing, and Carrie saw the congrancy of dreams and reality.

However, such a life can not come so easy, go to the flat land, must come to a steep slope, or even a fire pit, the hotel owner had an accident.

In desperation, Hurstwood and Carrie fled to New York.

For the rest of his life, the hotelier was like a dog.

She was once again experiencing hardship.

By a chance, Sister Carrie found work in the opera, and her beauty and natural voice paid for it. She rose in popularity and wealth, while Hurstwood became before her like an old, rusted machine.

She left Hurstwood, and lived by herself in splendor.

Hurstwood gradually fell into decline and finally committed suicide.
