The novel the old man and the sea is based on real people and facts. After the end of the first World War, Hemingway moved to Cuba and met the old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway's ship sank in a storm, and Fuentes saved Hemingway. From then on, Hemingway and Fuentes forged a deep friendship and often went fishing together. The old man and the seaIn 1936, Fuentes went out to sea and caught a big fish, but because the fish was too big, it dragged on the sea for a long time. As a result, it was attacked by sharks on the way home. When he came back, the big marlin only had a skeleton. In April 1936, Hemingway published an essay entitled "above the clear water: a letter from the bay" in the squire magazine, in which an old man went fishing alone in a small boat and caught a huge marlin, but most of the fish were eaten by sharks. At that time, Hemingway was deeply touched by this matter and realized that it was a good novel material, but he never had the opportunity to write it!Shortly after Christmas in 1950, Hemingway had a strong desire for creation. He began to write the old man and the sea (originally called the existing sea) in the villa "viewing club" on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba. The first draft was completed on February 23, 1951, which took only eight weeks. In April, Hemingway sent the manuscript to his friends who visited Cuba and won unanimous praise. Hemingway himself thought it was the best work he could write in his life!
