By displaying the image of Bertha as a female litigator with deep internal relationship with Jane in front of the readers to discuss her relationship with Jane, we can better explore Jane's rebellious character from Bertha's crazy act, and then reveal the destruction of women by the patriarchal society in Victorian Britain

Disability and the awakening of female consciousness.

Bertha's image alludes to European colonists and ruled indigenous peoples who conquered overseas. Jane Eyre's brave, rebellious, enterprising, and even a little bit of pride is actually a reflection of the image of European colonialists in the 18th and 19th centuries; and Bertha's bad, disturbing image in the original book: crazy, vulgar, barbaric, is the appearance of the indigenous people in the eyes of the colonists at that time.
