Jane Eyre lived a miserable life in that house. She was indoctrinated with the idea that she should be very grateful for Mrs. Reed's keep by the maids and her cousins. However, she was treated badly and unfairly. She was abused by her cousin John and the master Mrs. Reed turned a deaf ear to Jane Eyre's being bullied. Jane Eyre liked reading but she rarely had a chance to read. In others' minds, she was less than a servant.
