《A room of one’s own》一个人的房间
Hello,teachers and students.Today I would like to share with you Virginia Woolf’s 《A room of one’s own》.
A few days ago,I read the English and Chinese version of Virginia Woolf’s A room of one’s own in my reading abroad.Due to my English proficiency,I chose to read the Chinese version first and then read the English version. Why did I choose to share this book? When I was choosing the book,I was attracted by the title.I thought it was a book that taught people to be alone and reconcile with the world. However, after reading the content,I chose to share this book because of the feeling left to me.
First of all,I would like to introduce Virginia as a British female writer, who is regarded as a pioneer of modernism and feminism in the 20th Century.Sharp but sensitive, she lived a life of grace and madness, and “A Room of One’s Own”,published in 1929,was a fine book. The book consists of six chapters, and I will share my feelings with you in some chapter.
Chapter 1
The first chapter give me the biggest feeling that the author is a thoughtful person.I always unconsciously imagined the image of her in my mind, she has deep eyes, which reveal the persistence and strong, and has a small world in her head. She is always smoking a cigarette and thinking quietly.I also admire her very much, it seems that everything can trigger her deep thinking, about thoughts about history about equality.Maybe for her, there’s always life and thought.
At the same time in the first chapter, she said a important sentence that I want to share with you “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”.
Chapter 2
In this chapter the author goes to a museum and looks up books about women. She is Angry because many of the books reveal contempt for women, and one professor in particular makes her angry because of his disparaging remarks about women.(Weaker muscles of,Mental, moral and physical inferiority of).The collective vanity of using the inferiority of one sex to highlight the superiority of one sex resulted in women being unable to obtain any source of income legally, so women also began to shy away from the poverty surrounding the gender. As an independent-minded woman with a fortune of 500 a year in libel, the author knows firsthand the importance of money. How can thinking not be a luxury for a busy body? Really, the biggest feeling of this chapter is one sentence:it is good to have money, send a female friend in the article a sentence to inspire everyone. What a change of temper a fixed income will bring about. Therefore not merely do effort and labour cease, but also hatred and bitterness. I need not hate any man; He can not hurt me. I need not flatter any man, he has nothing to give me.
This is one of her feelings after she got the 500 British pictures. She said,"I don't need to hate any man,a man can't hurt me I don't need to please any man, a man can't give me anything."I think this kind of feeling may arouse some kind of resonance in today's society,or we will take it for granted, because in today's society, right I feel the same way, that there is no economic foundation, can only rely on others, but there is a job and economy. After the source,I can do what I want to do,she taught me how to be an independent and free person.
Chapter3
This chapter, when Virginia talks about women giving way to their families, reminds me of what I saw a few days ago.Even though we have been tempted countless times to let down our defenses -- out of love, out of fatigue, out of compassion,or out of kindness. None of us women should do this,we will lose inch by inch what we have fought for. May we be active and not passive, may we persist and not be discouraged.
Chapter 4
This chapter seemed to be more about the rise of women's free thought and their resistance in the face of all kinds of obstacles. What made me feel deeply in it was a quote from Jane Eyre:Then I longed for a power of vision which might overpass that limit; which might reach the busy world, towns, regions full of life I had heard of but never seen. that then I desired more of practical experience than I possessed; more of intercourse of my kind, of acquaintance with variety of character than was here with in my reach... I believed in the existence of other and more vivid kinds of goodness, and what I believed in I wished to behold. So since we live in the present, we are lucky,so now, experience more, cherish more.
Chapter 6
Share a heartfelt quote from this chapter:So that when I ask you to earn money and have a room of your own, I am asking you to live in the presence of reality, an invigorating life, it would appear, whether one can impart it or not.
I always think that feminism does not emphasize that women's status must be higher than men's, but Gender equality,or"affirmative action",but how difficult it is to achieve this. It's like Woolf in the text says:There have been at least two colleges for women in existence in England since the year 1866; that after the year 1880 a married woman was allowed by law to possess her own property; and that in 1919 she was given a vote.
Anyway,I believe we must have the ability and conditions to "earn money and have "a room of our own" to live the life we want.
Finally,I got to know Woolf after reading the book. When I see her quote The eyes of others our prisons; their thoughts our cages.I was surprised and I fell in love with her,A Room of One's Own which teaches women how to be independent and free,to live for themselves to live according to their own feelings, and she is a very powerful person People's life should be to pursue their dreams, to become their own, such a life will be full.Live according to your own will, so that you will not complain and regret, this way of life is the healthiest way to live.
My share is over, thank you for listening.
