The commander of the fleet was Zheng He (1371-1433), an important official in the court of Emperor Yongle (r. 1403-1424) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Born to a Muslim family, Zheng He also believed in Buddhism and Mazu (Chinese goddess of the sea). Intelligent and knowledgeable about navigation, he was entrusted by the emperor to direct all seven adventurous missions

Zheng He's voyages to the Western Seas were the largest in ancient China with the largest number of ships (more than 240), the largest number of seafarers and the longest sea voyage. They were decades earlier than those of many European countries, which directly reflected the power of the Ming Dynasty. Zheng He's voyages were far more than those of Portuguese, Spanish and other navigators, such as Magellan, Columbus, Da Gama, etc., for nearly a century. Zheng He was the forerunner of the "Great Age of Navigation" and the only Oriental. There are different opinions on the purpose of Zheng He's voyages to the West. One said that he wanted to promote the virtues of the Ming Dynasty. It is recorded in the Biography of Zheng He in the History of the Ming Dynasty that "he also wanted to show his soldiers to foreign countries and show China's prosperity and power".
