  Heathcliff asked Linton to write to Edgar, hoping that Edgar would allow Kathy to meet Linton. After Kathy met Linton, Linton refused to let Kathy go in various ways, and Kathy was willing to marry him after understanding Linton's situation. Heathcliff did this because Kathy knew Linton's situation and wanted to promote their marriage.
