Mr. Rochester explains to Jane Eyre the circumstances behind his marriage to his mad wife Bertha Antoinette Mason. He told her that he had been deceived into marrying Bertha when he was young, because she had a large dowry, and that the Rochester family had forced him to marry her for their wealth and status. However, Bertha's mental illness becomes more and more serious after the marriage, and her crazy behavior makes it impossible for Rochester to live with her. Rochester admits that he tried to lock Bertha in the attic to prevent her actions from causing more harm to the estate and himself. After Mr. Rochester explained the cause of the matter, Jane Eyre had a deep sympathy for his situation. She did not turn away from Rochester because of his past, but chose to stand with him more firmly. She rejects St. John's proposal and decides to marry Rochester, even though he has a wife and is disabled. Jane Eyre's decision shows her love and respect for Rochester, as well as her firm pursuit of her own emotions.
