Eliminate your Pride and Predjude

Pride and Prejudice is a great work of literature written by Jane Austen. It is a story among Elizabeth Bennet, Fitwilliam Darcy, Jane Bennet and many other people, on behalf of the etiquette and values of the middle class and aristocratic stratum in 19th century in Britain. Based on the main line of the love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, the novel unfolds a long picture of various kind of people in that specific times. However, if you ask me, the most charming part of the novel must be the penetrating discussion about “prejudice” and “pride”.

In the novel, “prejudice” can be seen as a kind of scorn caused by the limitation of social status and narrow vision. This form of prejudice can be easily found in the story, including Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Catherine who look down on Elizabeth, and even Mr. Darcy who has ever proudly made a proposal to Elizabeth. The author hints her disagreement of this kind of prejudice by arranging a fail ending for Caroline Bingley and Mrs. Catherine, while Mr. Darcy, who realizes his fault and tries his best to make amend for it, eventually get the admiration from Elizabeth.

From another perspective, “pride” can also be got rise by the people in lower social status giving in to their identities and only want to flatter and attach themselves to the higher classes. Take Mr. Collins as an example, he treats Mrs. Catherine as inviolable host and keeps flattering her. To some extent, it’s their overlook of their own dignity that leads to the pride of others. On the contrary, it’s Elizabeth’s strong sense of dignity and freedom that lets her win sincere love and respect from Mr. Darcy.

Pride and Prejudice are something which need to be eliminate not only in the social interaction, but also more importantly, in the values. Pride can result in unfair ideas and inappropriate treatment to others, while prejudice is a kind of unwise judgement to a person which can prevent you from understanding him more deeply and fairly.

All in all, Pride and Prejudice is a charming novel, which is a representative reflection of the inappropriate views and values of the inequal classes relationship in that specific times. It’s also fascinating to read the story of Elizabeth, who bravely breaks through the social limitation and finds her true love.
