This book discusses the value and origin of Chinese spirit in many ways .At the same time, we learned about what the spirit of Chinese people is. But in my opinion, Gu Hongming Confined to the society of the time, some pedantic ideas affected him as before.
Gu Hongming was highly esteemed the spirit of Chinese people, and insisted only in this way that learned the valuable spirit can European prevent themselves from uninterrupted wars. he vividly depicts that Chinese people live in the life of a soul : " Gentle is not weak in nature, nor is it weak or yielding, but it is not tough, harsh, rude or violent. The real Chinese may be rough, but there is no roughness in rough; The real Chinese may be ugly, but his ugliness is not terrible; Real Chinese may be vulgar, but there is no aggression in vulgar; The real Chinese may be stupid and ignorant, but there is no absurdity in ignorance.” From this series of discussions, it is not difficult to see that Chinese people do have a lot of shortcomings, but these shortcomings are also revealed somewhat lovely. Then he inferred this fact that Chinese people also have the spirit of sympathy from the evidence he had gathered . He pointed out what's different from the way in which westerners restrict people's behavior through outward force is that the Chinese discipline themselves through the religion of good citizens. What gu hongming describes in this book, however, is only the Chinese people of that time and even a long time before that time. These assertions are indeed ironic. In this book, for example, Gu hong-ming's views on women are rather out of place. The Chinese concept of women is that of a woman with a broom in her hand who cleans and keeps her house clean. In fact, the Chinese written character for a "wife(妇)" is composed of two radicals – (女)meaning a woman and (帚) meaning a broom. In the description of women in the second chapter of the book, gu hongming wrote about "three concord and four virtues" and praised them highly. This is where he moved corruption, he in some places too much believe in the way of Confucius and mencius. What's more ridiculous is that he once compared men to teapots and women to teacups. Teapots usually have several teacups, so he believed that men should marry concubines.
As a group ,The book revealed the essence of the spirit of Chinese people to some extent .
