In this winter holiday I read The Spirit of The Chinese People written by Mr. Gu Hongming who was the first person that had a command of science, language and Oriental sinology. At that time when Mr. Gu lived, Chinese civilization was impacted by Western civilization, especially by European civilization and advanced Western science and technology. In order to change this situation, spread and find a way out of ancient Chinese civilization, Mr. Gu made a decision to write this book to awaken people’s inspiration and make them be aware of the importance of Chinese civilization.
The biggest characteristic of Chinese people is “gentle”, which is domesticated, not wild and cunning. Because of the advancement of Confucianism in China, the real Chinese need not be protected by the physical force such as policemen and army. However, at the same time, Europe was at World War I and was governed by the Prussia Militarism. There was even the religion of the worship of the mob in Europe. Therefore, Chinese civilization is senior to European civilization.
It is a tradition that man can have handmaids or concubines ancient China, and Mr. Gu thought it should be aroused. In Mr. Gu’s opinion, Chinese man who have concubines should be responsible for them and provide protection for his concubines. On the contrary, the European man, who only think for himself, play with a girl for a night, which is very selfish. However, some ancient rules in China are so harmful to Chinese woman that they had been unprivileged for a long time, which should be thrown in modern time. Oppositely, the marriage custom and some qualities of woman such as yao tiao should be aroused.
It is acknowledged that Chinese language has many kinds of dialects and has different and deep meanings. Chinese language is a poetical language, which can be easily reflected by Chinese Tang Poetry which only use tens of characters but convey abundant meanings. What I have learned from this chapter is that although Chinese language is very difficult to study, as long as we have a heart of nature, all people around the world can learn Chinese language well. I think Mr. Gu introduced Chinese language to Europe in order to make European who was at war had a natural heart.
Chinese people have created plenty of rich scholarship and abundant culture, especially the poetry and literature, such as Tang Poetry and Confucianism, which is great value in human history and combination between mankind and nature. As we Chinese, we should feel proud of such great scholarship. In Chinese scholarship, a powerful country should have a wise ruler and right rules, which was told to European Emperor by Mr. Gu in order to change the situation in Europe.
Honestly speaking, at the beginning of reading, I’m a little afraid of reading a whole book written by English, but the China spirit pushed me to read it continuously. This book was written in 1915, although there are some opinions are different from modern time’s and even some mistakes, it is brave of Mr. Gu to spread the Spirit of the Chinese People to Europe in that time. It’s worthwhile to learn Mr. Gu’s bravery and intelligence, and it’s necessary for us to arouse and succeed the Spirit of the Chinese People.
