After reading The Spirit of Chinese People, I am impressed by a sense of national pride which Gu would like to convince others during a period of tough and weak background in China. In his opinion, deep, broad, simple, and delicacy are the preeminent characteristics of us Chinese compared with French American and Germany.
Mencius says, what I hate in your clever men is that they always distort things. he wrote this book trying to illustrate the real Chinamen and the value of Chinese culture. By analyzing the moral cause of the war, he found that it is the worship of mob in Britain which is responsible for the might worship and abnormous enormity and monstrosity in German Militarism. He also appeals to the German to put down their narrow, hard, rigid, excessive hatred of unrighteousness. Thus, he suggests Right and Tact and with good taste which China Bible --Five Canons and Four Books educate Chinese.
Gu mainly introduced the Religion of good citizenship, perhaps some of his conception s is not really suitable for modern China, as he was still loyal to the feudalism and he insisted that the polygamy is rightful and legitimate, which is ridiculous in our eyes. Personally speaking, though his apprehending of filial piety still plays an important part in our daily life, the youxian, or puduer, debonair and three obedience and Four virtues is not suitable to female in present days.
Distinct from other races, here is the inner being of the Chinaman. Without wild, savage or ferocious portions in Chinese sentiment, inexpressibly gentle is used by Gu to describe Chinese character. Much is forgiven them, because they love so much. I can't deny there are so much shortness in our nature which lots of foreigners hate, averse and disapprove. However, the author tried his best to explain and describe the real Chinese culture and history which inflect Chinaman for more than 2500 years. I can't agree more about his views of the reasons of gentleness and sympathy in our Chinese nature: We live a life of the heart--a life of emotion or human affection. The beautiful peculiarity, we process the secret of perpetual youth: The real Chinaman, we see now, is a man who lives the life of a man of adult reason with the heart of a child. We can enumerate poets like Li bai and Qu yuan, from whom we can feel the innocence and imaginative like little child and the deepest love and loyalty to the country
The discussion of Confucius also attracts me a lot. In Gu's concept, the burden of the mystery of the universe weighs upon human beings. Religions refuge them from the threatens of the nature and cruel merciless. Confucius is religion equivalence in Chinese people's heart, its teachings have been acknowledged to be true and its rules of conduct to be binding by the whole Chinese race and nation. His opinions help me better understand the significant impact of Confucius.
Last but not least, this book help foreigners have a different view of Chinese spirit and culture before, and it can also teach student nowadays how to understand and regard our nations compared with western world. We should at the same time admire the learnt scholar for his contribution of the real Chinese man and Chinese culture.
