  In my opinion, we must know the background and main idea of a book before reading it. The book was published by gu hongming in 1914 in the English language newspaper China review. It was in the late qing dynasty that the Chinese image was seriously distorted. With his pen and paper, he maintained the dignity of Chinese people and changed the prejudice of some foreigners against Chinese people.
  The book was well known at the time and has since been translated into many languages. The main thrust of the book is obvious: to reveal the Chinese spirit and expound the eternal value of Chinese tradition.
  In this book, he compared Chinese people with americans, British people, German people and French people, pointed out the four spirits of Chinese people, and advocated the use of Confucianism to solve the problems existing in western society.
 We have to admit that his writing level is high and knowledgeable, with a strong logical ability, and the impact on China at that time. But his ideas are undoubtedly pedantic and old-fashioned in our eyes now. Say what three concord four virtues, simply make fun of. But his patriotic passion makes us ignore these, because his strong patriotic feelings, let us admire this man, admire this book. Even if the book is not perfect, patriotism puts us on the same page, to admire him, or to help correct him. A variety of reviews, must show the broad Chinese people, and the spirit of freedom
