  After reading this book of Guhongming,I must admit that my past view on Qing dynasty's people is a little root and branch.Mr Gu is different from those pedantic scholars who only have the knowledge of eight-legs essays.He has made great progress in that background though there still existing some drawbacks in his self-confident opinions.                 
  But just as the saying goes:Gold can't be pure and man can't  be perfect. We must use critical thinking not only when appreciating and chewing this book but also while remarking it.
  Firstly,when it comes to the citizenship of our country and the Confucianism. I couldn't help feeling proud of our excellent culture and the wisdom of our ancient people. I think it is his outstanding ability of description that makes readers resonate.     
  Secondly,when he analyzed the war and the war out in the chapter of appendix. I think he is a logical and rational writer because the method he used is reeling silk from cocoons which is strict and precise.Just take the process which he defended for rulers, soldiers and diplomats of European countries for instance.He explained the truth with powerful evidences instead of pale words. Apart from this,he pointed out that the core of the thing is the change of the functions of rulers, soldiers and diplomats of European countries. They don't act as they should be. The original rulers have become expensive ornamentations,the soldiers who engage in the war are just mechanical automatons,And the superficial statesmen--diplomats are only the puppets of the mob.So, Mr Gu give a conclusion that these people above have not their own wills, and this is the reason why we can't put blame on them.Except for his eloquent words. We must admit that he has a talent for conecting the front and back. Through the explanation of the war cuase,It's natural for him to introduce his own opinion that rulers must have real power though it's a little pedantic idea which essentially stands for the feudal monarchy.                 
  lastly,Readers can realize obviously the author's pride of his country and through his constant introductions of his country's wonderful culture  to foreigners, We can naturally reform the feeling that Guhongming is a real patriot. He hold the belief firmly it's the good religion of citizenship and powerful rulers that ensured the long peace in China. As a result, He criticized those foreigners who didn't know truly of China but slandered Chinese culture out of vanity fiercely.What a loyal man to his country!Although the book is an excellent work. There still existing some drawbacks in it as I have said earlier.When Mr. Gu talked about the woman of China. Readers can realize easily that he is inclined to have gender discrimination. We can conclude that women are possessions of men from his words that the Chinese feminine ideal should live for her husband and her husband's family. Despite we all know in recent society it is a ridiculous and pedantic thought.But on this subject, we can't impose high standard on him who lived in a time like that.
  All in all, the book called the spirit of Chinese is an excellent work!The reasons are as follows. First of all, Guhongming is a true scholar who has a talent for languages. So it's reasonable for him to write the work with an appropriate wording expression. Moreover, the philosophical thoughts included in it deserve our thinking twice. Last but not least. It opened a new door for me to our valuable ancient thoughts and overturned my past immature view. I'm very glad to have read this book from which I learned a lot about our Chinese culture and situations in that time.
  As far as I am concerned,every Chinese reader can harvest national pride and strengthen his confidence of exceeding other civilizations after finishing his read of this book！
