中国人的精神 书评决赛
After reading The Spirit of Chinese People,it’s hard to describe my feelings.There is no doubt that this book is of great interest and significance,but it is difficult to evaluate its usage to people nowadays.
As we all know that the author of this book,who masters more than nine languages is quite knowledgeable.However,in my opinion,he is so old fashioned that I can’t agree with a few of his viewpoints.
The author think that the question we must ask,in order to estimate the value of a civilization, is,what type of humanity,what kind of men and women it has been able to produce. It is rational,an outstanding civilization nourishes and brings about a nation,while a nation inherits and carries forward its civilization.This is what we called the interdependence,and it can never be divided.
Followed by is “The three characteristics of the Chinese character and the Chinese civilization are:depth,broadness and simplicity”.He mentioned that point to prove the difference between Chinese,Americans,Englishmen,Germans and Frenches.Maybe it is suitable to summarize people in that era,but clearly it is not accurate today.As far as I am concerned,the characteristics of a civilization ought not be limited in just three or four words.I have to admit that a civilization do have its unique features,but those can’t be recognized as the symbol of it,because there are still some people don’t fit in.Although they are the minority ,we can’t ignore them anyway.
“The first spirit of the Chinese people is gentle. Gentlemen are not weak in nature, nor are they vulnerable to submission. They are not tough, harsh, rude and violent.” When it comes to gentle,the English culture maybe the first impression.I’ve heard that the author is thoroughly accomplished in western culture,no wonder that he apply “gentle”to Chinese.But I think it’s not appropriate.To some extent,I prefer courteous rather than gentle.What’s more ,courteous is just a little aspect,I’m more willing to mention that the first spirit is to conquering the unyielding with the yielding.
At last the author sighs with emotion “A real Chinese person has adult’s thought and child’s soul.So the spirit of Chinese will keep youth forever and it never dead.”Theoretically,there is no blemishes in this sentence ,and it even put forward the glorious expectation of the future.But through my reading this book, there is always a question in my mind:Is this book another Utopia?I’ve found that the author maybe too optimistic to state objective facts in China.
Through lots of literature,I got some distinct experience about the era which the author lives in.Gradually,I start to realize that my opinion to this book maybe unilateral.In the late Qing Dynasty,under the pressure from imperialist powers,our nation suffered a lot.And people from developed countries don’t know about Chinese culture,even worse,they maintain lots of misunderstandings on our civilization.However the author and this book open their eyes to China,and promote our civilization to the world.In a word,the author is a fighter,he not only effaces misunderstandings,but also leads the bright direction for people at that time.
