Chines Sprit
After reading Gu Hongming's The Spirit of the Chinese People, it was found that his patriotism was pure patriotism without any impurities, which covered his grotesque feudalism, his conservatism and his pedantic. He was probably the most amazing scholar in that era. Gu Hongming had 13 PhD degrees in his life. He was educated in the West for many years. He should have a Western mind. However, the image he left behind for his descendants is absolutely "Chinese" style. However, his Spirit of the Chinese is to reveal the spiritual life of the Chinese people, promote the value of Chinese traditional culture, and advocate the theory of saving the West by Confucian civilization. In this book, he also talks about democracy, Chinese language, war and so on, although we now seem to have limitations, but his sharp pen and unique insights still make you feel admired. Of course, the whole article does not mean that all of them agree with him, but his intention to write this book to safeguard China's innocence can be seen, which is already worthy of our admiration.
In those days, China was in danger of poverty and weakness. Whether Chinese nationals in China or overseas Chinese, they rose up one after another, had the money to pay for it, and made a strong contribution. Chinese children and sons went to the national calamity together to resist humiliation with one heart. In the "most dangerous time for the Chinese nation" and "all the people are united in their efforts to advance against the enemy's artillery fire", all of us have made great efforts to achieve national independence and liberation, and the people of all nationalities and democratic parties have worked with one heart and one mind to achieve our "great cause of nation-building" and the Chinese Sleeping Lion has stood up since then.
Gu Hongming was born in the South, studied in the West, married in the East, and served in the North. He was proficient in nine languages, such as elite, French and German. Instead of being subjected to Western individualism, he started from the benevolence, righteousness, courtesy and wisdom of Confucian culture and tried to find a good prescription for the collapse of European civilization. He was indeed an out-of-date Confucian, who criticized Western culture, but won the respect and admiration of Westerners. He strongly advocated and adhered to Chinese traditional culture, but was scorned and rejected by his compatriots. Behind the interweaving of contradictions, it was the brand left by the feudal era at the end. From the perspective of contemporaries, some of his concepts are undoubtedly quite advanced. When most people disdain the ignorance and inferiority of their fellow countrymen, he does the opposite and excavates the "meekness" characteristic deep in the Chinese character. Compliance is like "domesticated animals", not fierce, not harsh, not rude, not cruel, "the real Chinese may be rough, but there is no crude in the rough. The real Chinese may be ugly, but there is no ugliness in ugliness. The real Chinese may be vulgar, but there is no aggression and noise in vulgarity. The real Chinese may be foolish, but there is no absurdity in folly. The real Chinese may be cunning, but cunning is not vicious." However, from the perspective of modern people, these seemingly "white" statements lack rigorous logical argument, and are more like children's shortcomings forced into despair, unable to stand on their feet.
Under the attack of natural disasters such as heavy snow, Wenchuan Earthquake, Southwest Drought, Yushu Earthquake and so on, China was shaken and saddened by the whole country and the whole world. However, people of all ethnic groups in the mainland of China, Taiwan compatriots, Hong Kong compatriots, Macao compatriots, or overseas tourists have extended their help. These are regardless of region and identity, some generous donations to help, some directly to the disaster area to participate in rescue and relief. The moving pictures are still unforgettable.
These are the spirit of the Chinese people, the spirit of the Chinese children. However, Gu Hongming also said that there are so many Chinese spirits, and the most wonderful feature of Chinese people is this: as a nation with a long history, it has both adult wisdom and the ability to live a child-like life - a spiritual life.
