Review 赵隽 E26
赵隽
The whole book looks like a master-piece written by a fan of Confucius, and actually it is. Gu Hongming was a great scholar who had a thorough knowledge of both China and the west and was famous both at home and abroad in modern Chinese history. To tell the truth, I read this book from a view of a student in modern society, with a trace of prejudice and doubt. There are many ideas I can't accept. For example, about war, Chinese used to live in a life without constant wars, which is contrary to the European, but a life with constant pressure from the ruling class, contributing to revolts and revolutions. About humanity, I believe that human nature is a combination of good and evil. And there is nothing wrong with the opinion of humanity of evil. But there is no denying that the theory of humanity of good is deeply rooted in Chinese traditional culture. About women, from my perspective, women in ancient China sacrificed themselves to their husband, sons and family, which was seemed as a law and order. Well, it’s unacceptable now.
Modern Chinese people have been influenced by many foreign cultures and thoughts. With the passage of time, they have formed complex and integrated values, and people around the world have become more and more tolerant of the existence of different ideas. And this book played a huge role in the dissemination of traditional Chinese mainstream thought.
This book let more people, not only foreigners, but also ourselves know about Chinese culture and Chinese spirit. What's more, it improves our national self-confidence, national pride and sense of responsibility. Chinese culture is unique, whose value and significance is far beyond our imagination.
China has always been seen as a nation without religion. In Gu Hongming's theory, Chinese religion and law can be compared to the law of the gentleman. However, the essence of the gentleman's law lies in sacrifice. Confucianism is roughly somewhere between Platonic philosophy and true religion. "The people have neither enough wisdom to understand them as thoughts, nor enough character to follow them strictly as laws." The morality of Platonic philosophy has too high a threshold for the public, and the morality in the religious sense still needs to rely on the personified image of god. Only Confucianism, without additional assumptions, effectively constructs a set of rules to maintain the stability of the country and family, which is considered as the brilliant creation of the Chinese people.
Chinese described by Gu Hongming are gentle, kind, dedicated and lovely. Tagore wrote in Stray Birds that a great man is a born child, and when he dies, he gives his great childhood to the world. Gu hongming also said in this book that The real Chinaman is a person with the head of a grown up man and The heart of a child. It must be admitted that these descriptions are the ideal Chinese, and not many Chinese can truly achieve this requirement, but this is a requirement of the whole national culture for themselves. It should be a requirement of each of us.
