Book Review of The spirit Of The Chinese People
I read a book this winter vacation which is called The Spirit Of The Chinese People,which is Gu Hongming’s work.Now I want to make a brief introduction to the auther Mr.Gu Hongming.Gu Hongming whose name was tangsheng ,was a modern schlar and translator,also,he was known as the first one who can have a thorough knowledge both from China and western countries in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.
Though it was difficult for me to understand the book totally,I still feel his deep love for China and praise for Chinese spirit from the phrase he has mentioned many times in his books:the real chinaman ,true human intelligence,the chinese type of humanity,and so on.
Take the Chinese spirit as the core,the book reveals the spiritual life of Chinese people and also expounds the value of Chinese traditional culture.It was a feat in that era when China’s image is seriously distorted since late Qing Dynasty.That is to say,by writing this book,Mr.Gu Hongming preserved the dignity of Chinese culture and changed the prejudice of some westerners towards China.Just as he wrote in the preface of his book “……is an attempt interpret the spirit and show the value of the Chinese civilisation.”He really done it!So the book created a great sensation and was translated into a variety of languages as soon as it was first published.
By contrasting the Chinese with the Americans,the British,the Germans and the French,Mr.Gu Hongming emphasized that only the real Chinaman fully possess depth,broadness,simplicity and delicacy which are all excellent spiritual traits,and advocate to use traditional Chinese Confucianism to solve the solve the problems in western society.
When Ifirst known thai Mr.Gu Hongming was a restorationist,I was really superised for from the book of The Spirit Of The Chinese People,I can not see at all he was a feudal superstitious person,instead,I was overwhelmed by his wisdom and rigour.Though he was a restorionist,and was called by the world to be intractable,he also write The Spirit Of The Chinese People which can not done by the world!As far as I’m concerned,this book not only reveals the value of Chinese culture,but also reflect a spititual outlook that “everyone was drunk and he wake up alone”!
The thought of the argumentation in this book is very rigorous,it is really beyond my expectation.How could he argue such a sensible tobic with such rational thinking?
For example,in order to prove that China’s image is seriously distorted ,he took the Rev.Arthur Smith’case as an example and many other argumentation method to prove that many westerners could not understand the real Chinaman for they did not fully possess depth,broadness,simplicity and delicacy,finally,he ended the argument with a sentence “in order to understand the real Chinaman and the Chinese civilisation,a man must be deep,broad and simple.”
Though I can only read this book superficially,I have benefited a lot from this book.I hope one day I can really understand this book,understand the spirit of Chinese people.
