Feeling After Reading The Spirit of the Chinese People
This winter holiday, I finished reading the book The Spirit of the Chinese People written by Gu Hongming. Well, it can be a little hard for me, a freshman, to read. But I finally finished reading by sometimes referring to dictionary.
In this book, Mr.Gu reveals the spiritual life of Chinese people and elucidates the eternal value of Chinese traditional culture. Mr.Gu compares Chinese culture with some foreign countries’ culture to stress the advantage of Chinese culture and point out that Chinese people are deep, broad, simple, and in addition, delicacy. Then, he also introduces the Chinese women, who are charming, graceful, pure and selfless in his mind. As to Chinese language, Mr.Gu says that Chinese is difficult. ”That Chinese is difficult is because it is deep, it expressing deep feeling in simple language.” That is absolutely right, for Chinese culture and Chinese language are so extensive and profound.
I’d like to admit that most of Mr.Gu’s opinions are pretty good, which can not only show the world our Chinese people’s spirit, but also boost our sense of national pride and mission. But some words of the book can make me feel sick, either, especially for his opinion on Chinese concubinage. Mr.Gu thinks highly of Chinese women. He regards them as selfless for they are willing to share their husband with other women. And he also agrees that Chinese woman would, or should, only live for others. The others here refer to her father, her husband, her sons. But why can’t they live for themselves? Well, they were trapped by the feudal ideas, so was Mr.Gu. As a matter of fact, I can see Mr.Gu’s respect to the Chinese women, but sometimes his idea is not so enlightened. As for the woman ideal, maybe in my point of view, or maybe because of the society in which I grew up, it is really hard for me to understand the life of so-called woman ideal.
Reading is a process of choosing. We should learn to absorb the essence and abandon the dreg.
To sum up, reading this book really improve my understanding of the Chinese people’s spirit, and in the meantime, improve my national pride and make me feel more proud of my homeland, China. Maybe I also learned something. That's being kind and gentle.
