中国人的精神 书评

贺之希

The early twentieth century was a dark age for Chinese people. In those days, having  experienced the defeat of the war and many other kinds of disgrace, a lot of people began to doubt the value of the Chinese spirit. However, a scholar, Gu Hongming, wrote a book called the Spirit of the Chinese People to convince the others that our spirit do have its unique value.

The book discussed about what the Chinese spirit really is, and he also focused on Chinese women and Chinese

language. However, what impressed me the most is the Chinese characteristic. The writer believed that if there is a word that can describe the Chinese, it will be gentle. In his opinion, compared with the people in western countries, we Chinese are more compassionate. As the western countries had become richer, their people there tended to be blinded by gain and show no mercy. However, we Chinese were kind and gentle, and this characteristic is really precious.

From my perspective, as we can see that China has also been developing rapidly, we can’t lose our gentleness, which is one of the symbols of our spirit. I do hope that Chinese people nowadays can inherit our traditional culture and make China a greater country which will never be insulted again.
