Recently, I have finished reading the spirit of the Chinese people by Gu Hongming. The content of this book enables me to have a deeper understanding of the profound Chinese culture and the true Chinese spirit.Gu hongming, the author of this book, studied Chinese and western culture and was the first Chinese to master western science, language and Oriental sinology in the qing dynasty. In the early 20th century, there was a saying among westerners that one can go to China without visiting the Forbidden City but cannot read Gu Hongming. This shows his influence in the society at that time.In the book, he argues that civilization must be judged by "what kind of men and women it makes".He criticised missionaries and sinologists as "authorities on Chinese civilisation", saying they " did not really understand the Chinese and the Chinese language".He pointed out that "to understand the real Chinese people and Chinese civilization, one must be profound, broad and simple", because "the three characteristics of Chinese characters and Chinese civilization, it is profound, broad and simple, in addition to" sensitive ".He thinks the Chinese are very polite. The essence of true politeness is to consider the feelings of others.Chinese people are polite because they live a spiritual life. They know how they feel and are easy to consider others' feelings.Chinese courtesy, though not as considerate as Japanese courtesy, but let a person feel comfortable, because as the French perfect expression, it is the courtesy of the mind.In contrast, Japanese politeness, while thoughtful, is less comfortable and can be said to be a well-rehearsed form of politeness -- similar to those learned in the theater. This is different from spontaneous courtesy from the heart. In fact, Japanese politeness seems to have no fragrant flowers, and the politeness of truly polite Chinese people has a kind of fragrance, the fragrance of the precious ointment from the heart. He also discussed the problem of Chinese.Spoken language is easy to take root because it is an extremely simple language. It is a language without cases, tenses, rules and irregular verbs. In fact, there is no grammar or any other rule. Therefore, spoken Chinese itself is not a difficult language for Chinese people. But for europeans who come to China, especially those who are more than half educated, even speaking Chinese is a difficult language. He thinks of spoken Chinese as a completely uneducated language. It's actually a child's language.Although sinologists insist that Chinese is hard to learn, for European children it is easy to learn spoken Chinese. Therefore, he thinks that learning Chinese should treat yourself as a child, you will not only enter the gate of heaven, but also learn Chinese well. However, there are some points in the book that I don't agree with. For example, concubine and raise "three inch gold lotus".But the gist of the book is worth learning. What is the spirit of the Chinese people? It is not an easy answer. This book interprets the Chinese spirit through "Chinese spirit", "Chinese women", "Chinese language", "John in China", "the great Sinologist" and "sinology".Gu deeply analyzed the Chinese spirit through many examples and comparisons.I think Chinese modesty is the most valuable and needs to be continued. The Chinese spirit should "absorb the essence and discard the dregs" and learn from each other.Only in this way can the Chinese nation move forward and never be bullied by anyone .As a Chinese in a new era, I think we should learn from the useful parts of the book and try to be a profound, extensive, simple and sensitive person.
