Mr Gu Hongming believes that the meanings of Confucianism are to teach people how to become a filial son and a good citizen, and those who do these have faith; While religion in the European sense is to make people to be ideal and perfect people ,thus they will have faith .But I do not agree if a man can’t achieve that goal , he doesn’t own a faith. In my opinion, a man with faith will spare no effort to accomplish the goals . It is the faith in your heart that support you to fight ,to face the difficulties .And he thinks that European religion teaches the public to be a good man ,while the Confucianism teaches to be a good citizen .I think that if you want to be a good citizen , you should try to be a good man at first .A decent man will never break the law in his heart ——his faith. He will behave himself and obey the rules .If a man just do what others ask him to do but don’t have any personality ,he can’t be called a man but a slave .
The most impressive sentence is “The real Chinese are the combination of the heart of the child and adult intelligence. It is a domesticated creature. This kind of gentleness and elegance is the most noble body fragrance and the most precious perfume ... But our society has left at that time too far away.” The most wonderful thing about Chinese people is that as a mature people with a long history, a people with adult rational wisdom, they are still able to live a life like a child-a life of the mind. However , It is true that with the development of the society and the rapid increasing of the economy ,more and more people become greedy and unsatisfied .They begin to forget the original dream in their heart ,chasing money and fame . They use their wisdom for their own gain, not for the benefit of society. Those are not true Chinese spirits. The real spirits passed down from our ancestors thousands of years ago are hard-working, honest, modest and admiring the etiquette. These advantages are flowing in our veins, waiting to shine and spread heat, which will guide us to grow up to be a real Chinese person.
Although I sometimes disagree some of the ideas in this book, but I think highly of it. This book need to be read by every Chinese, because if you agree with the author, you can understand most of the spirits of Chinese ;if you do not agree with the author, you can think by yourself ,explore the true spirits on your own. Then you can have a better understanding of what qualities you should equip in the road of being a wonderful person. If you are good enough, you can enrich the spirits .Emerson said: "We judge a person's intelligence by the size of his ambition. "Believe you can do it ,and then you can do it!
