After reading the great book in the winter holidy which have past,I am touched by the thoughts described by Gu.In the past I didn`t know him very much,but now I am so amazed at him for what he has experienced.He is a scholar studying in western for many years,so he is proficient at nine languages and obtained13 doctorates.There is no doubt that he is a genius in late Qing Dynasty.In his day when china is guadually falling behind in face of the bullyings from western countries.But misfortunes never come singly,it is also facing queries from compatriots.It is estimable for him to write such a book as you can imagine.Gu Hongming uphold the dignity of chinese culture with his pen,as he has written in the book,compared with we chinese,American are broad, simple but not deep,English are deep, simple but not not broad.German are broad, deep but not simple while we chinese posses all these.In his words,chinese is a domesticated creature,is inexpressibly gentle.
Everyone thinks that morality is an obligatory duty.In this book,we can see that Gu has many words to introduce confucius .In China, unlike the Western capitalist countries, which rely on religion to maintain the people's hearts and minds in compliance with the management of the rulers, Confucianism has been deeply rooted in the hearts of people for thousands of years. Confucianism teaches the common people to be loyal to the monarch and to be filial to their parents and elders. Only in this way can they be regarded as a qualified Chinese citizen. It is this Confucianism that helps China maintain social order without religion. It can be said that Confucianism can replace religion or even go beyond the role of religion.
Gu Hongming is a master of both Chinese and Western culture. Foreigners often complain that Chinese is difficult to learn and that it is irregular. Indeed, compared with English and Spanish, Chinese does not have many grammars, irregular verbs and so on. So foreigners accustomed to learning English can not help feeling inappropriate, but children who have not begun to receive too much education will feel that Chinese is very easy to learn. Because people in china learning Chinese is a process of learning and remembering with the heart, not just through brain.Therefore, if westerners want to learn Chinese, they should learn with a child's mentality , with their soul. In this way, you will not only quickly master the good way to learn Chinese, but also enter the paradise of Chinese language and literature. Gu Hongming's description of Chinese language is really exciting, and his heart has long been proud of Chinese. I have to say that it is never relaxing for Gu to stand up bravely and introduce Chinese culture to the world when China is despised by the Western power, and to spread the spirit of the Chinese .
In the era of Gu , when China's feudal traditional system was greatly questioned, most scholars and thinkers influenced by Western thought advocated reform, and the domestic voice against traditional culture was even louder. But Gu Hongming, a freak in the late Qing Dynasty, was different from other people and took the opposite route from most people though he was ridiculed by others for his stubbornness. But in today's view, although Gu Hongming's description of Chinese culture is somewhat overpraised, it is actually worth appreciating.
Of course, I do not agree with Gu Hongming's description of Chinese women here. In feudal society, loyalty to the monarch and filial piety to parents are what everyone should do, but the stipulation of "three obediences and four virtues" for women is foolish. Men protect their homes and defend their country,loyalty to the monarch means devotion to society. Why not women? Men and women should be equal, monogamy is advocated by a civilized and equal society. Instead of marrying a concubine for her husband, as Gu Hongming thought, was a manifestation of her tolerance and love for her husband. It was just a helpless move by a woman of low status.
Although there are extreme and erroneous remarks , in general, Gu Hongming can do his best to introduce Chinese culture to the world, and his love for Chinese traditional culture is worthy of respect. Nowadays, many people have begun to call for the promotion of excellent traditional culture, the spirit of the Chinese people is somewhat empty. I think we should re-recognize the spirit of the Chinese people and adhere to the combination of Chinese and Western cultures.
