The Spirit of the Chinese People , the Value of Chinese People
What makes Chinese enjoy a history of 5,000 years ? What makes Chinese people go through numbers of hard times? The book ——The Spirit of the Chinese People ,written by Gu Hong Ming ,who is the famous scholar in Qing Dynasty——gave us the reason.
When I got this book ,I thought it just lists the traditional nice quality of China .With a strong curiosity ,I opened this book .
The front pages introduced Mr Gu from a view of his student ,Mr luo .Because of the experience of studying abroad ,Mr Gu was good at English and other language .Although his major is engineering ,his talent didn’t spend out completely .As a teacher ,he is strict with his students ,making three main rules with them .These rules remind them of the basic respect of teachers ,the basic point of students .And the rules are still important to our students these days .
The time Mr Gu lived was a time of great changes and mixture of different cultures .China was suffering from luck of food and basic construction .Domestic trouble and foreign invasion made our country floating in waves .At this time , Mr Gu realized what makes Chinese people go through the wars and famine and what Chinese people really need during hard time .Thus he wrote the book .
But why he wrote this in English ,not in Chinese ?This question puzzles me at the time I know it was written by a Chinese man .After I finished reading ,I know the reason why .One of the reasons is that Mr Gu was studied abroad at young ,so his English is better than Chinese .His student ,Mr luo also said sometimes he made mistakes when writing characters on black board .Another reason ,in my opinion , is that Mr Gu wanted to show our Chinese spirit and culture to the foreigners , more than to show it to us Chinese people ,which makes them know the strong belief in us so that we would never give in to them .
What leaves me a deep impression is the chapter of Chinese Language .In this chapter ,Mr Gu divided Chinese language into two parts ,spoken and written languages .He disagreed with the men who take Chinese as a difficult language just because of the lack of grammar .He suggest Foreigners learn spoken Chinese that “Be ye like little children ,you will then not only enter into the Kingdom of Heaven ,but you will also be able to learn Chinese .”It suggest Foreigners should learn Chinese with respect ,and then learn Chinese culture with respect .As a result ,treat China with respect .
In this book ,Mr Gu shows his wide knowledge in many areas and the spirit of the Chinese people .He tells people that China is a country with steel of hearts and strong in belief .He awaked Chinese people in the hard time in 20th century .
