Since the late qing dynasty ,china’s image has been seriously destroyed. Gu Hongming published this book in English in 1915, and he maintained the dignity of Chinese culture with his pen and changed the prejudice of some Westerners towards China. This book stirred up the West, and was later translated into many languages after published.
After reading the passage, I have more understanding about Chinese people.
In the book, and as the truth, westerners are formidable doubtlessly, their confidence also showed in their talk and action obviously, in the opposite, Chinese looks timid but in fact they are grace. The contrast is the result of the kindness deep inside Chines hearts. Compared with western countries, real Chinese restrain themselves wildness, then show others the domestication from inside to outline. All in a word, it’s the kindness of Chines people, because of kindness, there’s chance to think in others position, accept differences, showed as domestication. Understanding is a great example of the personality, it’s why foreigners hard to hate Chinese. It’s the source of Chinese polite.
Kindness, which is a morality originate from traditional Chinese religion culture, and the morality concept represented by Confucius also contribute the form and development of Chinese ancient culture, these all have close connection with Chinese great self-culture.
Except the soft side, strong is another word to describe Chinese, this side can be seen on Chinese glory and responsibility sense. Emperor system cover the whole ancient China, the award from upper to lower produce the origin glory sense, the emperor did, and the common person did too. To protect the glory sense, the most important thing is responsibility. For most Chinese, their brave all from responsibility, as for me, this kind of responsibility have to put their kindness off sometimes, and all kinds of Chinese actions, but one thing is same, they all from love. Living for others is another Chinese character, love connect with responsibility, responsibility is the meaning of their protection and being.
Complex Chinese language is match with the complex of Chinese personality. For many foreigners Chinese equal to a sealed book, the most difficult thing to be accept is that a word matches many meanings and many word could explain one word, complicated match-relationship makes Chinese a ancient and meaningful language. Well, although Chinese have too many advantages that other countries don’t have, it doesn’t mean Chinese are strong and prefect, Chinese need to observe the advantages from other people and other countries. Great translation works is an important bridge to build culture-single-transport, and narrow the gap of the word, western modern thoughts are transported by books and other translations mostly.
Secondly intelligence is a weakness of Chinese people, we need to introspection ourselves when we face the accusation of ignorance from foreign enemies. Honest is written on the deepest of Chinese gene, face the wars, Chinese take the victory of the country to the first place, and self benefit always putted at the lowest, to the social phenomenon, the great thought is a chance, a chance for us to rethink that whether we needn’t to think about self benefit all the time.
Last but not least, not every action of Chinese is correct, but peace is beneficial to every one. To inherite and develop Chinese advantage, we should take actions to protect the peace of the word.
